Strategies to Defeat a Motion

The following strategies can be used to defeat a proposal:

  1.   Do your homework! Get the facts so you can effectively rebut any and all the points made by supporters of the proposal.
  2. Line up those opposed to the idea; give them background material on the proposal; urge them to speak against the motion.
  3. So as not to be thwarted by technical maneuvers at the meeting, have a copy of the organization’s bylaws, a motion chart, and the parliamentary authority with you.
  4. Obtain the floor as soon as you can and speak emphatically in opposition to the motion.
  5. Raise questions (points of information) that put the proponents on the defensive. (Proponents are usually on the offensive, opponents on the defensive–reverse this situation.)
  6. Amend the motion so that you can live with it if it’s adopted or amend it such that it’s no longer palatable to the supporters.
  7. Move to postpone indefinitely or use delaying motions (refer or postpone).
  8. When you vote by voice, vote enthusiastically.
  9. Be persistent.
